The Eiffel Tower, standing
320 meters
high is the emblem of Paris, France. It is a very popular tourist destination
as well. It consists of three levels, reachable by stairs or elevator.
The Eiffel Tower was constructed for the International
Exhibition of Paris in 1889, commemorating the centenary of the French
Revolution. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel, and was the world’s tallest
building in 1930. The peak of the tower
was used to measure the speed of wind and other scientific experiments in 1889,
and in 1898 Eugene Ducretet received signals from the tower.
However, in 1909, the tower was almost torn down, but
was not because of its antenna used for military purposes. It has been used for
French radio since 1918 and television since 1957. In 1954 it was scaled by a mountaineer, 1984
it was parachuted off and in 1923
a man rode a bicycle down from the first floor.
